About the Oklahoma College Media Association

Promoting & Supporting Student Media
at Oklahoma Colleges

Formed to unite and elevate college journalism programs, the Oklahoma College Media Association (OCMA) serves as a vital network for students, advisers, and educators.

Our mission is to empower student journalists, faculty advisers, and campus media organizations. We accomplish this by providing professional development, networking opportunities, and recognition of outstanding student media efforts.

OSU journalism school Director Harry Heath founded the Oklahoma Collegiate Press Association in 1975. The organization name changed to Oklahoma Collegiate Media Association in fall 2010 to recognize that students now create websites and multimedia.

Dr. Jared Johnson, director of the OSU School of Media & Strategic Communications, serves as the association’s ex officio executive director. OSU Faculty member Brooks Garner guided the organization from fall 1984 until his retirement in spring 2010. Associate Professor Joey Senat continued the work from 2010 through 2018.

With the assistance and cooperation of OSU, the Oklahoma Press Association assumed management of the OCMA in fall 2025. It strives to preserve the important role student media plays in Oklahoma journalism and to support the next generation of media professionals.

OCMA is strongly dedicated to supporting student press freedom, ethical journalism, and innovation. By offering resources, professional development, and a collaborative community, it continues to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of college journalism in Oklahoma.
